Title: 2010 Membership Dues
Comment: Ladies and Gentlemen:
December 31, 2009 is the cut off date for the 2010 dues. On January 1, 2010 if your dues are not paid you are delinquent. Please take a moment if you have not paid your 2010 dues and send them in before December 31, 2009. This not only helps the Post, it helps the Department in its standing with National, and ranks us high within the 52 departments. Please mail those dues in today?

Title: Saturday of Enjoyment
Comment: I wish to say thanks to the Picnic Committee who did an outstanding job. Food was good, music good, and everyone seemed to enjoy their self.

It was well worth the drive from Slidell. Thanks, for a job well done.

Title: A Member Opinion
Comment: There is currently a move among a few Legion members to permanently close the American Legion swimming pool, fill it with red clay and pave it over for a parking lot.

I strongly recommend before any such decision is made everyone stop and think about this $90,000.00 investment made by American Legion Post 139. We may be in a bad economic situation at the moment, but I do feel it will pick up in the near future.

In my opinion, this is a BAD move and I personally feel, fillin in the pool with red clay is detrimental to Post 139, it shows the membership that our officers have no back bone in standing up to economic hard times, and showing the public that when the going gets rough, we throw up our hands and quit, rather than tighten our belts and fight back.

There are a few members who only want what they can get from the Post, free beer, free meals, etc., but when it comes to assisting the post, they are no where to be found. In other words, all talk and no action.

So think twice gentlemen before you vote YES on closing the Legion pool.

Title: REPLY ON BINGO2FCPOF
Comment: NOT ONLY BINGO IS DOWN BUT ATTENDANCE TO MEETINGS AND ACTIVITY IS ALSO LOW WITH THE AGE OF OUR MEMBERSHIP GROWING. IT WOULD HELP IF EACH MEMBER WOULD TRY TO ENLIST A NEW MEMBER AND HELP MAKE THE MEMBER ACTIVE IN THE POST.

POST 139 BINGO-- A LONGTIME LEGACY LOST

For more than 50 years the primary support for all American Legion Post 139 community programs has been BINGO. Unfortunately, Bingo no longer exists at Post 139. This simply means that the Post membership will be without many of the personal/individual benefits they have enjoyed over the years.

What caused this situation to occur? One could say it’s the economy, but that’s not true. All other organizations along the coast with Bingo are still in business and doing well. In order for us to be successful with Bingo, the personal/physical support of the membership and their families are needed. We had to hire personnel to work Bingo activities, other organizations members volunteer their time to making bingo a success. Bingo players like to see the ‘owners’ (members) actively participating. Post 139 membership has been conspicuous by their absence and support. Therefore, public participation has decreased to the point that it is not financially feasible to continue bingo. When operating expenses exceeded 60% of income (rule of State Gaming Commission), We chose to forfeit our license for a 90 day period, with plans to re-organize with a bingo working team made up of legion members.

With the cessation of Bingo and the loss of monthly income the following actions were taken by Commander Moran, with approval by the Executive Committee: The Large Hall has been shut down, available only for rentals; power for the building is of limited use; meetings are now held in the clubhouse; meals after meetings are no longer served; as well as parties and entertainment. Other than rentals the Clubhouse is now the sole income producer for Post 139. Once we re-organize, and bingo is again a profitable reality, all of the personal/individual benefits we’ve enjoyed over the years will happen.

Please consider this editorial as an open request for your actively helping the Post to again become successful with our new and better organized Bingo Program. Should you want more information or desire to help, please call Commander Bill Moran at 228/-493-0480. Your cooperation and support are certainly appreciated.
